Tourism is on the increase, but mainly from the neighbouring countries. Albania is well worth a visit in spite of the risks, with its traditional Muslim/Mediterranean feel against a backdrop of Soviet character. Although the country still shows signs of general hardship and disorder there are plenty of places of interest for every taste, including museum cities, archaeological sites, castles, inspirational countryside, and, of course, the glorious Albanian Riviera offering as yet a relatively unspoilt Mediterranean coastline. Tirana, the capital, has a long way to go to catch up with its Eastern European counterparts, but is an attractive destination with well-maintained squares and parks, architecture and museums. Family-run hotels and restaurants are generally well-kept, showing a pride of ownership, and generally the people are friendly, hospitable, and open to the world’s influences after being held for so long in an isolationist regime. http://www.albaniantourism.com/ http://www.albania-hotel.com/index.html http://www.albanian.com/information/countries/albania/travel/hotels.html
